RHS Garden Harlow Carr is celebrating a major milestone this week as it welcomes its 500,000th visitor in a single year for the first time in the garden’s history.
The landmark moment comes during a year of exceptional growth for RHS Harlow Carr off Otley Road in Harrogate.
To mark the occasion, the RHS surprised the 500,000th visitor with the gift of an RHS Life Membership, so that they can enjoy days out at the garden for many years to come.
Curator Fiona Slight and Visitor Services Manager Tom Butler welcomed Elizabeth and Essam Ragheb, from Harrogate, with an RHS Lifetime Membership as they visited the garden.
Elizabeth Ragheb, 500,000th visitor said:
“We have been RHS members for many years because of our love for gardens, wildlife, and spending time outdoors.
“We are delighted to have been gifted this life membership, and we especially enjoy bringing our grandchildren to RHS Harlow Carr — something we look forward to doing for many happy years ahead.”

“This achievement would not have been possible without the dedication, passion and hard work of the entire RHS Harlow Carr team, whose commitment ensures the garden remains such a special place for everyone who visits.”
Over the past quarter century, RHS Garden Harlow Carr has undergone significant transformation and has expanded its landscapes, visitor experiences and educational offerings.
Major developments have included the creation and enhancement of signature garden areas such as the Main Borders, Streamside and Winter Walk alongside the Montague-Burton Teaching Garden and Kitchen Garden, designed to inspire and educate gardeners of all ages.
The garden has also invested in world-class facilities, including the environmentally-designed Bramall Learning Centre and upgraded garden centre, improving comfort and sustainability for visitors.
A striking architectural addition, the Thaliana Bridge over Queen Mother’s Lake, has enhanced access and views while contributing to the garden’s overall master plan.
More recently, the historic Harrogate Arms building has been restored and reopened as a café, reconnecting the site with its heritage and extending the garden’s offer.
Throughout this period, RHS Harlow Carr has welcomed steadily increasing visitor numbers, hosted community and learning programmes, and strengthened its role as a place of horticultural excellence and public enjoyment.

“The Streamside area will continue to be revitalised, with further planting enhancements, improved paths and interpretation to enrich this iconic part of the garden and make it even more inspiring for visitors of all ages.
“There are also ongoing improvements to garden infrastructure and sustainability, including upgrades to facilities and support buildings, ensuring the garden remains welcoming, resilient and accessible for future generations.”
