A new independent wine bar and shop has officially been unveiled in Harrogate town centre.
Ake & Humphris officially opened its new Oxford Street shop on Thursday (5th February).
Owners held a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Fiona Movley MBE, Chair of Harrogate International Festivals and President of The Harrogate Club, alongside Deputy Mayor Cllr Jenny Travena.
The new site occupies the former Shuropody unit and marks the company’s third location, adding to its existing premises on Leeds Road in Harrogate and in Collingham.
The launch event was attended by local business figures and community representatives, with guests welcomed by Champagne and canapés supplied by Nomad Catering.
Among those present were Tom Gordon MP and Martin Mann, chief executive of Harrogate District Chamber of Commerce.
Paul Auty of Ake & Humphris said:
"Independent businesses are the soul of the high street, and after 15 years, we are excited to finally come into the town centre.
“Our business has always been built on people first, and we have hung our hopes on genuine human interaction.
“We hand-pick our way through thousands of bottles each year to ensure we are advocates for wine know-how, simply shared."
The interior of the Oxford Street venue was designed by Mark Hinchcliffe and features a distinctive, intimate style.
Fittings include repurposed 1920s wardrobes used as displays, a bespoke chandelier made from antique copper wine funnels, and a library ladder that allows staff to reach higher shelves stocked with whiskies and premium wines.
The opening also represents a return to the town centre for founders Edward Ake and Jonathan Humphris, who first met while studying at Harrogate Grammar School.
After several years of hosting pop-up wine bars, the new premises establishes a permanent base for the concept.
Reflecting on the opening, Jonathan Humphris said:
"In an era where many high streets seem to be giving way to takeaways and betting shops, the opportunity to offer something a little different is very important.
“We wanted to create an experience - a cosy getaway where you can enjoy good wine and good conversation in an environment a little better than the ordinary."
On officially cutting the ribbon, Fiona Movley MBE said:
"It gives me great pleasure to mark the official opening of this very special new wine bar.
“This has clearly been a true labour of love and a fabulous addition to Harrogate - a place to meet and enjoy good company and a fine glass."
The Oxford Street wine bar and shop is now open to the public, operating seven days a week from 11am to 10pm, with opening hours on Tuesdays running from 4pm to 10pm.
