Northern train drivers vote to continue strikes for another six months

Northern’s ASLEF train drivers have voted to continue striking for another six months, affecting trains through Harrogate and Knaresborough.

The union voted “overwhelmingly” in favour of a fresh round of strikes and overtime bans earlier this week. The next strike affecting Northern trains through Harrogate and Knaresborough will take place at the start of March. ASLEF members at Northern will take strike action on Friday 1st March for “a failure by the company to adhere to existing agreements”, according to the union. They will also take action short of a strike – also known as an ‘overtime ban’ – on the network from Thursday 29th February to Saturday 2nd March. ASLEF members are in an ongoing dispute with the Department for Transport (DfT) over pay and working conditions. ASLEF’s General Secretary, Mick Whelan, said:

“We are fed up to the back teeth with the bad faith shown, day after day, week after week, and month after month by these two companies. ‘We always stick to agreements which we make. These companies think they can break agreements – which they freely enter into – whenever it suits them. And they’re wrong. “This is a shot across their bows and a sign of things to come. “They need to stop what they are doing, start to behave properly and honourably, because their drivers are no longer prepared to be treated like this.”
