A Harrogate boy is calling for more inclusive playgrounds in the town after finding a lack of accessible equipment for disabled children.
Koen Hellfeld, a Year 7 pupil who has grown up in Harrogate, says he was inspired to take action after learning that many children are unable to enjoy local play areas.
Koen said he had “always had fun” at playgrounds with his family, but realised this isn’t the case for everyone.
He said:
“Every kid should be able to go to a playground and have fun without being excluded from social activities.”
His concerns were sparked after seeing a news report featuring a wheelchair user struggling to access playground equipment.

Koen decided to investigate the situation locally by visiting three playgrounds in Harrogate: Pannal Ash Playground, Harlow Hill Playground and Valley Gardens.
He found that one had no accessible equipment at all, while the others had just a single accessible feature – the same type of swing.
Koen has since contacted local councillors to ask what is being done to improve inclusivity, but says he is still waiting for a response.
The UK Government has pledged to improve accessibility nationwide through its Disability Action Plan, with local councils expected to lead improvements in their areas.

While waiting for answers, Koen has decided to take matters into his own hands by raising money for Henshaws, a charity supporting people with sight loss and other disabilities.
He said:
“I really like Henshaws because they help people with employment, supported living and making friends.”
As part of his campaign, Koen will be hiking in the Yorkshire Dales and the Peak District from May 1st to May 4th to raise funds.
At the time of publication, he’s raised £562 towards his £750 goal.
