A Harrogate school welcomed owls as part of a hands-on learning experience for its pupils.
Sparrows Class at St Peter’s Primary School met the birds of prey this week as part of their English work on The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark.
The story, which explores themes of courage and curiosity, set the stage for a visit from experts at the Harrogate Birds of Prey Centre.
During the session, pupils learned a range of facts about owls, including how the colour of an owl’s eyes can indicate whether it hunts during the day or night.
They also heard how feather colours help the birds blend into their surroundings and explored the five species of owl found in the UK: the Tawny Owl, Long-Eared Owl, Barn Owl, Short-Eared Owl and Little Owl.

The visit featured two owls, Luna and Puck, which proved to be a highlight for many children. Some pupils were given the chance to handle the birds under supervision.
One Year Two pupil said:
“Holding Luna was amazing! I never knew owls could be so soft and calm. I can’t wait to write my fact file!”
Staff at the school said the visit supports the curriculum by offering real-world learning to inspire pupils’ upcoming owl fact file writing tasks.
St Peter’s CE Primary School welcomes enquiries from families interested in learning more about the school.
