A Harrogate primary school has relaunched its weekly eco award as part of a wider push to encourage pupils to adopt more environmentally friendly habits.
St Peter’s CE Primary School has reintroduced its Golden Light Switch Award, which is presented each week to the class that earns the most “eco points”.
Pupils can collect points by switching off lights, closing doors and ensuring devices such as smartboards are turned off when classrooms are not in use.
As part of the relaunch, the school has added a new element to the initiative: a cuddly Earth-themed toy that will stay with the winning class for the week.
Pupils will also be invited to take part in a naming competition for the new mascot over the coming weeks.
Recent winners of the award include Sparrows in Early Years and Key Stage 1, and Ravens in Key Stage 2.
The scheme is supported by staff member Mrs Williams and the school’s Eco Climate Ambassadors, who help promote sustainable behaviour throughout the school.
St Peter’s says the initiative is designed to encourage children to take responsibility for simple, everyday actions that contribute to energy saving and environmental awareness.
Headteacher, Mr Paul Griffiths said:
“I’m proud of the creativity and commitment shown by our pupils and staff.
“All our sustainability projects reflect the values we hold as a school and the strength of our community spirit.
For families exploring schools for their reception-age children, St Peter’s offers an environment where care for the planet is woven into everyday learning.
