Harrogate and Knaresborough MP has been speaking in Parliament about the issues faced by the autistic community in our area.
Following a meeting with the Harrogate branch of the National Autistic Society, Tom Gordon has called on the Government to give time for a debate on providing support for the autistic community.
During questions yesterday (Monday), Tom asked whether the Government would make time for a debate on issues affecting the autistic community.
He also talked about the issues raised by those he met with last week.
They had referenced issues including with getting diagnoses, getting help and support to gain employment, and stigma.
He said:
“Last week I brought the concerns of my constituents directly to the House of Commons.
“This is what being an MP is all about: raising my constituent’s concerns and problems, and holding the Government to account.”
Tom met with the Harrogate branch of the National Autistic Society recently alongside Councillor Chris Aldred, Harrogate’s current Mayor.
It was a chance for the members of the branch to meet Tom, and raise some of the concerns and challenges they face.
He added:
“SEND, including autism, desperately needs more investment and support to make sure that this large and diverse group of people can flourish.
“We must see more support for the autistic community from the Government.
“The community has so much to offer, if only we can give them the proper support, and help them to be part of society, free from stigma.”
