A church in Harrogate has become the town's first to be presented with a gold eco award for its environmental efforts.
St Mark’s Church received an Eco Church Award from The Ven Dr James Theodosius, Archdeacon of Richmond & Craven on Sunday (13th July).
It was received on behalf of the church by one of St Mark's youngest climate activists, Hannah, aged six, who already campaigns with her parents for cleaner air in Harrogate.
The Eco Church Awards - Bronze, Silver and Gold - provide a framework for churches who are trying to reduce their carbon emissions, by offering small, gradual steps on the journey to net zero.
St Mark's Church is the first church in Harrogate to be awarded Gold, but all the churches in the Deanery are diligently working towards awards.
Deborah Booth, St Mark’s Environment Officer, said:
"Tackling climate change is a vitally important part of the gospel message and this type of unusual, but increasingly frequent, weather event is a reminder to us all of the need for lifestyle changes."
Local dignitaries were also in attendance, including Councillors Chris Aldred (Harrogate Mayor), Jenny Travena (Deputy Mayor), Chrissie Holmes and Paula Stot.
The 190 strong congregation, celebrated with singing, prayers, a Bible reading and an inspirational talk from Archdeacon James.
He spoke of Christ's redemptive work on the cross that was “not only for humankind but for the whole of creation”, as symbolised by the cross itself being 'planted' in the earth.
