Former England Manager and Harrogate resident Gareth Southgate has been knighted in the 2025 New Year Honours list.
The 54-year-old retired from his role in the summer after guiding England to a second major tournament final - the only manager to do so since 1966 World Cup winner Sir Alf Ramsey.
And the former Crystal Palace, Aston Villa and Middlesbrough defender has now been recognised with a knighthood for “services to football.”
The New Year Honours List for 2025 recognises the achievements and service of extraordinary people across the UK.
Reacting to the news on his LinkedIn page, Gareth said:
"I'm deeply grateful for all the kind messages and comments I've received since the announcement of my Knighthood.
"It has been the greatest honour to represent my country as both a player and a manager for some 20 years and to be part of the game I love for almost 40.
“I am incredibly thankful for the amazing people and teams who have supported me both on and off the field.
"A special thank you to my family for their constant love and encouragement, though I must admit they've made it clear that the titles I hold at home will remain unchanged."
Gareth was given an OBE in December 2018.
Also included on the New Year Honours List for 2025 was one of North Yorkshire Council’s most senior officers - Stuart Carlton.
Mr Carlton, who joined the council in his current role in 2017, said he had been shocked but felt “extremely privileged” to be given the honour for services to children, young people and families.
He added:
“I’m still in shock really, I just never expected that such a thing could happen. It’s a huge honour and I feel very humbled to receive it.
“Like all these awards, it’s built on a long career of service and the hard work and dedication of many other people that I have been truly privileged to work alongside. I thank each and every one of them.”
Nine-time Paralympic champion Hannah Cockcroft has been made a CBE, whilst Olympic 800m gold medallist Keely Hodgkinson has been made an MBE.
