Ripon's Moonglu Cycling Club has made a donation of £392 to Yorkshire charity Open Country.
The donation was made from the proceeds of the Moonglu CC reliability ride earlier in the year which saw over 100 cyclists tackle a 54-mile route through Wensleydale from Ripon.
Open Country - which has its headquarters in Harrogate - helps to support disabled people access and enjoy the countryside which has a positive impact of health and wellbeing.
The charity runs an average of 26 activities per week which includes tandem bicycle rides from Ripon.
The donation from Moonglu CC will go towards the maintenance of the Ripon based tandems allowing the Charity to ensure that their members can continue to enjoy the benefits of cycling in the local countryside.
Club Treasurer Shaun Puttock said:
“One of the aims of Moonglu cycling club is to help support cycling in the local community as it can make a positive contribution to both the environment and our health and wellbeing.
“This is aligned with objectives of Open Country and we are proud to be able to help them with this donation.”
The cheque was presented to Open Country’s Ripon Tandem Club on Thursday (19th June) following the Moonglu’s weekly Thursday night ride, which sees riders of all abilities take part.
The rides are organised into groups which cover those who are less experienced, through to faster members.
There is also an off-road group for mountain bike and gravel bike enthusiasts.
Kate Leggett, Countryside Activities Officer for Open Country said:
“We were delighted to receive the generous donation from Moonglu which will go towards the running of the Ripon Tandem Club, and help disabled people to enjoy the freedom and fun of tandem cycling and all the health benefits that come with it.
“We often see the Moonglu cyclists whilst on our rides in the countryside around Ripon, so it was really nice to be able to meet some of the club members in person.”
Moonglu cycling club is open for new members to join with an annual individual membership available for only £15.
Potential new members can attend two trial rides before committing to join.
