New walking rugby sessions to be held in Harrogate

A walking rugby group is starting in Harrogate next month.

Weekly walking rugby sessions are set to begin on the Stray next month.

Harrogate Rugby Club has announced it will launch the sessions on Tuesday evenings, starting from April 14th, with the initial meet time set for 6.30pm on the Stray opposite the Coach and Horses.

Walking rugby is a slower-paced, non-contact version of the traditional game, designed to be accessible for a wide range of participants.

While it is primarily aimed at those aged over 50, the sessions are open to anyone aged 18 and over, regardless of experience or fitness level.

Organisers say the format offers an opportunity for former players to remain involved in the sport, as well as for newcomers to try rugby in a more relaxed and inclusive environment.

Each session will last just over an hour, with participants invited to continue socialising afterwards at a nearby venue.

As daylight hours increase, the start time is expected to move to 7pm later in the season.

The first session will be free to attend, with membership required for those wishing to continue taking part.

Mike Cowling from Harrogate RUFC said:

“We’ve visited other clubs in the area at York, Pocklington and taken part in their walking rugby events, and it’s great for especially older people to get together, exercise and also socialise.

“All of the people I’ve spoken to when visiting those clubs told me how great it is for their mental health and wellbeing.”

The sessions are being led by Tony Lewis, who also started touch rugby at Harrogate.

Participants are free to just turn up, with the first session free of charge. Membership is required thereafter.
