Beckwithshaw Community Primary School in Harrogate has achieved a significant turnaround, guided by an "inspirational" headteacher.
The school, which received an Ofsted rating of 'Inadequate' in 2021, has since been named the top-performing state primary school in Harrogate, according to the Telegraph 2025 League Tables.
Beckwithshaw was judged “Inadequate” in all areas in December 2021 before it was re-inspected in July 2023 and rated “Good” across the board.
The improvement has been led by Executive Headteacher Victoria Kirkman, who oversees a federation of three schools – Beckwithshaw, Kettlesing and Ripley Church of England Primary Schools.
Miss Kirkman, who has extensive experience in school improvement, said her focus has been on improving life chances for all pupils, particularly the most vulnerable.

Under her leadership, the schools have developed a culture of high expectations and an emphasis on both academic achievement and pastoral care.
The federation’s curriculum has played a key role in the progress, with opportunities that include partnerships with Harrogate Town Football Club, a resident artist programme, an art exhibition at Ripley Castle and a music performance at Harrogate’s Royal Hall.
Miss Kirkman credited the wider school community for its role in the school’s success.
She said:
“This is the result of a truly collective effort.
“Our staff are dedicated, our parents are engaged, and our governors are deeply invested in the future of every child.
“Together, we’ve built something very special.”
The federation has also been active in community projects.
In June 2025, it led a Combined Schools Charity Concert featuring 12 schools from across Harrogate, raising nearly £10,000 for the Robert Ogden Cancer Centre and 0–19 Mental Health: Growing Healthy Harrogate.
The event, which brought together pupils from local authority, Church, and multi-academy trust schools, reflected Miss Kirkman’s belief in the role of education in strengthening communities.
