Harrogate MP blasts Budget for closure of Lancaster's Bakery

Tom Gordon MP has expressed his sadness at the closure of Lancaster's Bakery.

Harrogate MP Tom Gordon has expressed his sadness at the closure of Lancaster's Bakery - and said the latest government Budget is to blame.

The historic bakery will officially close on Saturday 1st February after more than 119 years in the town.

And Tom Gordon has expressed his sadness at the closure of the “stalwart” - and said the “ill-thought” Budget is hitting small independent businesses the hardest.

He said:

“It’s so sad to hear the news of Lancaster’s bakery closure. They have been a stalwart of the town for 119 years.

“This is exactly what I and so many others have been warning about. The changes in the Budget were ill thought through, and didn’t treat business as partners in the growth the Government claims it wants to see. 

“I’m concerned that small, local and independent businesses are being hit hardest. They are the lifeblood of our economy, and so important to local communities and culture.”

A spokesperson for Lancaster’s said rising costs is the reason behind its closure.

In a statement, they said:

"The last couple of years have been very challenging with rising ingredient costs and utility bills, but the Budget increases in employer costs has made the situation even worse.

"Added to all these increases is the reduction in Business Rate Relief for small businesses."

The spokesperson added:

"We would like to thank all our loyal customers both wholesale and retail who have supported us for so many years. Thank you."
