Harrogate girlguides take on 100-hour litter pick

A team of Harrogate guides are rolling up their sleeves to make a difference in their local community this summer.

12 members of the 28th Harrogate Guides are taking on a 100-hour litter picking challenge as part of their efforts to support a planned international trip.

The girls, aged 11 to 13, have pledged to complete at least 100 hours of litter picking across Harrogate during the school holidays.

Unit leader, Jean Tennant, said:

“This is the girls’ first international trip with Girlguiding and they’re so excited.

“They’ve been learning how to budget, plan ahead and fundraise responsibly, and this challenge is something they came up with themselves.

“It’s a great way for them to work together, do something meaningful for the local area, and contribute to the costs of the trip.”

The group plans to travel to Belgium by train, with visits scheduled to Ghent, Bruges, and Brussels.

Their itinerary includes a riverboat cruise, historical tours and a visit to a traditional chocolate maker.

In Brussels, the Guides will also take part in a wide game organised by Girlguiding North East England, joining other members from across the region.

The group will return home on Thinking Day, an international Girlguiding day of reflection and friendship.

Funds raised through the litter pick will support both the young members and the volunteer leaders taking part in the trip.
