Cundall Manor School marked the beginning of the Michaelmas Term last week with its annual triathlon - an event involving pupils from Year 3 to Year 11.
For the youngest children, it was their first introduction to the swim, cycle and run challenge.
Organisers say completing the event at the start of term provides pupils with a boost of confidence that carries into the classroom as well as onto the sports field.
Head of Girls’ Games, Louise Bessey, said:
“The triathlon is about much more than fitness.
"Pupils discover their own resilience, push through nerves or tiredness, and quickly realise they’re capable of more than they imagined.
"That sense of achievement translates into determination for every challenge they face throughout the year.”
The event is undertaken individually, but staff at the school highlight the team atmosphere, with pupils supporting each other throughout and celebrating successes together.
For new pupils in particular, the triathlon is designed to create a sense of belonging.
Cundall Manor describes the tradition as an opportunity to focus on participation and personal achievement, as well as competition.
The school also links the event to wider benefits such as self-esteem, well-being and confidence at the start of the academic year.
