A Ripon-based manufacturer has launched a nationwide search to find the UK’s top gritter driver.
Econ Engineering - the country’s largest producer of winter maintenance vehicles - has opened nominations for its first-ever Grit & Glory Awards.
The company says the awards are designed to recognise the skill, dedication and often-overlooked efforts of gritter drivers who head out in freezing, hazardous conditions to treat roads before dawn.
A spokesperson said:
"Research by Econ revealed that less than one in ten Brits believe gritter drivers to be winter heroes, despite them working long hours in all weathers to keep our country moving.
"That’s why we’ve launched the first ever Grit & Glory Awards, to shine a light on these hardworking individuals and raise awareness of their essential winter role."
The competition will highlight drivers who operate Econ vehicles and “go above and beyond” for their communities.
Last winter’s harsh conditions demonstrated the value of these workers, with drivers across the UK keeping key routes open in snow and ice.
The Grit & Glory Awards feature four regional categories – North England, South England, Wales and Scotland.
Regional winners will go forward to compete for the overall title of Gritter Driver of the Year, decided by a judging panel.
Entries close on Monday 15th December, and winners will be announced in January 2026. The national winner will receive a £500 voucher of their choice along with Econ merchandise.
