Martin House hosts first children's palliative care conference

Delegates at the Martin House Children's Hospice Conference 2026.

More than 70 healthcare professionals attended Martin House Children’s Hospice’s first dedicated children’s palliative care conference this week.

The event took place on Tuesday 15 September at the charity’s newly redeveloped hospice in Boston Spa.

Delegates shared specialist knowledge and discussed how to support children and young people with life-shortening conditions, and their families.

The programme covered palliative care at the hospice and in the community, real-life case studies and research projects at Martin House.

Afternoon workshops included training on care after death and guidance on referring families to a children’s hospice.

Charlotte Walker, Deputy Director of Clinical Services at Martin House, said:

“Children’s palliative care is about helping babies, children and young people live as fully and comfortably as possible, while supporting their whole family.

“Children with life-shortening conditions may receive care in many different places, not only in a hospice.

"By sharing the expertise developed at Martin House, we can help more professionals feel confident supporting children and families wherever they encounter them.”

Delegates also toured the redeveloped hospice, including its hydrotherapy pool, to see the facilities available to children and families.

Martin House supports more than 550 children and young people each year across West, North and East Yorkshire.

It provides care at the hospice, in hospitals and in families’ homes, while its Education Centre offers training to healthcare professionals.
