Housebuilder hands over allotments to Harrogate parish council

The official handover of Killinghall Moor Allotments.

A local parish council has been handed allotments on a new housing development to the west of Harrogate town centre.

39 purpose-built allotments in total have been transferred to Killinghall Parish Council by housebuilder Persimmon.

Parish Councillors recently joined representatives from Persimmon for an official handover ceremony in the company of local MP Tom Gordon and North Yorkshire Councillor, Peter Lacey.

Located on their King Edwin Park development, Persimmon has provided allotments ranging in size from 1,054 to 2,045 square feet.

In addition to the allotments, car parking spaces for 15 cars have been built with 6 dedicated water points within the allotment area.

Robert Bareham, Clerk of Killinghall Parish Council said:

“We’re delighted to formally adopt the new allotments at King Edwin Park which will provide residents with valuable opportunities to enjoy gardening and wellbeing.

“We look forward to seeing these allotments flourish as a shared community resource, supporting both individual enjoyment and collective pride in Killinghall’s growing spaces."

Tom Gordon, MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough said:

“It was wonderful to open the new Killinghall Moor allotments.

“The allotments provide a great opportunity for Killinghall residents to get involved in gardening, promoting physical and mental wellbeing, giving people space to unwind, exercise, and reconnect with nature."

Councillor Peter Lacey added:

“Whilst the ground was damp and brown, I had visions of sprouting broccoli, cabbages and potato flowers all around me!

"People are signing up fast, which will do wonders for the local community.”

Christopher Hull, Regional Managing Director at Persimmon said:

“It’s been fantastic working with the Parish Council and North Yorkshire Council to bring this project to fruition.

“We know there has been great demand locally for the allotments so we’re delighted to have got to the point where the community can now look forward to getting out their forks and spades.”
