Harrogate has been awarded a gold medal at the national finals of the Royal Horticultural Society’s Britain in Bloom competition.
The town was among eight finalists in the Small City category, alongside Aberdeen, Chorley, Derry, the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, Royal Tunbridge Wells, Shrewsbury and Torquay.
Aberdeen took the overall title, but a gold award remains a significant achievement for the many groups involved in Harrogate’s entry.
The results were announced at a ceremony in Brighton and will feature on BBC’s The One Show.
Harrogate qualified for the national finals after winning the Yorkshire in Bloom award last year.

RHS judges visited the town in August to assess its floral displays, community projects and environmental initiatives.
Locations including Horticap, Harlow Hill allotments, Rossett Acre Primary School, Rossett Acre Nature Reserve, Valley Gardens and the town centre were among those inspected.
A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Council said:
“Congratulations to Harrogate in Bloom and everyone involved in this achievement, including our team at Harrogate Horticultural Nursery who grow the plants.”
Harrogate in Bloom, a voluntary organisation, coordinated the town’s entry with support from North Yorkshire Council, Harrogate Business Improvement District, Harrogate Flower Shows, Horticap, Pinewoods Conservation Group, Friends of Harlow Carr, the Stray Defence Association, local schools and Woodlands Community Garden.
