Tributes have been paid to Dr Gerald Arthur Rolph OBE, the businessman and heritage champion credited with 'saving' Allerton Castle.
Dr Rolph passed away peacefully on Tuesday 2 December 2025 in Florida, USA, at the age of 92.
Tributes have been paid by family, friends, heritage groups and the trustees of the Rolph Foundation, who described him as a “visionary” whose dedication ensured the survival of Allerton Castle for future generations.
Born in 1933, Dr Rolph went on to enjoy a distinguished international career, serving as Vice President of Tandy and RadioShack and studying at Harvard Business School before becoming involved in historic preservation.

His commitment to protecting heritage would define much of his later life.
In 1983, he acquired Allerton Castle at a time when its future was uncertain.
Over the decades that followed, Dr Rolph led an extensive restoration programme, investing time, expertise and resources to return the 19th-century mansion to its former grandeur.
A spokesperson for Allerton Castle said:
"Dr. Gerald Arthur Rolph's legacy is one of integrity, dedication, and kindness. He is survived by his loving family, who carry forth his passion for service and commitment to excellence.
"Rest in peace, Dr. Rolph. Your light will forever shine in the lives you touched and the memories you leave behind."
Dr Rolph's work earned national recognition, and he was later appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his contribution to the preservation of heritage buildings.
The Rolph Foundation, which he established to secure the castle’s long-term future, said he would be “deeply missed” but remembered for his unwavering belief in the value of cultural and historic conservation.
Plans for a memorial service to honour Dr Rolph’s life and work are expected to be announced in due course.
