Lib Dems win Stray, Woodlands and Hookstone by-election

Liberal Democrats Cllr Andrew Timothy and Tom Gordon.

The Liberal Democrats won the Stray, Woodlands and Hookstone by-election last night (Thursday).

The party's candidate, Andrew Timothy, won with 1,094 votes, making up 43.8% of the vote.

Conservative candidate John Ennis received 768 votes.

The by-election was initially called after the resignation of councillor Pat Marsh, who was criticised following a string of anti-semitic tweets.

Cllr Andrew Timothy said:

"I’m thrilled to be elected to represent the people of Stray, Woodlands, and Hookstone. It is a huge honour and a privilege.

"I promised during the election that I would be a local residents voice at North Yorkshire Council and stand up for them on their behalf, that is exactly what I intend to do.”

The result means the Liberal Democrats have retained their control of North Yorkshire Council's Harrogate and Knaresborough constituency committee.

Tom Gordon, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Harrogate & Knaresborough, said:

“Once again this proves elections here in Harrogate & Knaresborough are a two horse race between the Liberal Democrats & the Conservatives.

"We will take the new members, new deliverers, new activists, new councillor and momentum forward into the general election to win back the parliamentary seat from the Conservatives.”
