Harrogate woman wins prestigious national care award

Harrogate Neighbours Care Assistant Sian Cox was presented her award by TV presenter Vernon Kay.

A Harrogate carer has received national recognition at the Great British Care Awards.

Sian Cox, Care Assistant at Harrogate Neighbours, was awarded first place in social care and named the Care Home Newcomer Award 2025.

She was presented with her award at the International Convention Centre in Birmingham by TV presenter Vernon Kay.

Sian had made it to the national finals after being named the regional winner and was one of nine finalists in her category.

She said:

“Winning this award comes as a wonderful shock. I would not be where I am today if it wasn’t for my amazingly supportive colleagues who have nurtured and supported me in every aspect of my role.

“I have never worked anywhere so special – but the best thing of all is the lovely people we care for in the community. I look forward to continuing to support our elderly community however I can to try and bring and little happiness and smiles to their day.”

Sian has a BA Hons in Young Children's Learning and Development and worked at a local nursery before joining Harrogate Neighbours in 2023.

She was nominated by Lynsey Robinson, Registered Manager at Greenfield Court Care and was awarded Regional Winner in November 2024, before going on to take the national title.

The Great British Care Awards celebrate excellence across the care sector.

The purpose of the awards are to pay tribute to those individuals who have demonstrated “outstanding excellence” within their field.

There were 21 categories on the night, with the Care Newcomer Award recognising a new member of staff who has joined the care sector within the last 12 months, either for the first time or after at least two years away.

Speaking about Sian, the Great British Care Awards committee said:

"The decision was unanimous - this year's winner has set themselves apart through remarkable passion and exceptional leadership.

“Facing challenges head-on, she has shown resilience, vision, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

“Her ability to inspire, lead with heart, and create lasting impact is extraordinary. What truly distinguishes Sian is her determination to push boundaries and redefine possibilities.

“More than just a newcomer, she is a trailblazer, paving the way for others and leaving an undeniable mark in her field.”

This is the first time a member of the Harrogate Neighbours team has won a national British Care Award.

Denise McEvoy, Chief Operating Officer as Harrogate Neighbours, said:

“I am so proud of Sian, the wider team and Lynsey for creating such a supportive and nurturing environment for Sian and all the other carers.

“Sian may be new to the care sector, but she has shown very quickly her commitment and passion for care – this shines through in the support she provides in the community and at our Day care centre – well done Sian.”

Sue Cawthray, CEO at Harrogate Neighbours, said:

“I am thrilled not only for Sian, who is so deserving of the award, but it is a first for Harrogate Neighbours to have a winner at the National Awards. It just highlights how important it is to recognise the work that care providers do day in and day out in a sector that continues to be met by so many challenges.”
