Harrogate and Knaresborough MP Tom Gordon has voted against the welfare cuts proposed by the Government.
The proposals included cuts to both Universal Credit and the Personal Independence Payment, more commonly known as PIP.
Tom campaigned for the changes to be scrapped, raising his concerns in parliament, working with disability rights groups and backing calls from charities and experts to rethink the changes.
The widespread opposition to the changes led to a gradual Government climbdown that saw the proposed changes to PIP scrapped.
Despite continuing widespread opposition and calls for the Government to think again, the revised bill was passed, albeit only affecting Universal Credit.
However, the Government has not ruled out future changes to PIP.
Tom Gordon said:
“I’m deeply disappointed that the Government has pushed ahead with this Universal Credit cut. Whilst it’s a relief that the PIP cuts have been put on hold, that’s little relief for disabled people who will still be worried – and remain so unless the Government does the right thing and scraps them entirely.
“The Government must deliver a fairer, simpler system that ensure people can get the support they need, rather than creating a punitive, penny-pinching welfare state. Rushed legislation without proper consultation is what we’ve got instead – and that won’t fix the real problems in the system.
“I’ll continue to fight any further welfare cuts and push for the long-term reform that our welfare system needs, to put people first and ensure everyone has the support they need.”
