Harrogate Fire Station has cancelled its annual open day this weekend as firefighters remain deployed to tackle the ongoing wildfire at Langdale Moor.
The blaze began on Monday evening (11th August) near RAF Fylingdales in North Yorkshire and has spread across several square kilometres of moorland.
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service has declared a major incident, with more than 20 fire engines and specialist teams working to contain the fire.
Crews from across the region, including in Harrogate, have been creating fire breaks, using aerial surveillance and damping down surrounding peatland to prevent further spread.
The decision to cancel Harrogate Fire Station’s open day, due to be held on Sunday (17th August) was made to allow local fire crews and resources to remain focused on the wildfire response.
The event, which typically features demonstrations, fire engine displays and community activities, attracts large numbers of visitors each year.
Authorities are advising the public to avoid the affected area and to follow official updates.
No alternative date for the open day has been announced.
