Harrogate duo send update from 12,500 feet as part of Kilimanjaro challenge

Steve McCready and Pete Gawtry have reached 12,500 feet on their Kilimanjaro fundraising challenge.

Two local men have reached 12,500 feet and have raised £4,600 as part of their Mount Kilimanjaro challenge.

57-year-old Steve McCready and 51-year-old Pete Gawtry began their challenge last week to fundraise for Harrogate Neighbours.

The duo are aiming to raise £19,340 – a £1 for every vertical foot they will climb together for the Harrogate-based charity, which supports older and vulnerable people.

And upon reaching Shira 2 camp, Steve and Pete have now scaled 12,500 feet - and are 23% of the way towards their fundraising target.

Pete said:

“I lost my dad last year and I wanted to do something to honour his memory - he was such an important figure and role model in my life.

“However, I am terrified of heights so alongside the physically challenge ahead, it’ll also be a mental one for me to overcome.”

Steve added:

“I also lost my mum last year – she was the matriarch to our large family and her absence has been really felt – particularly over the Christmas period.

“Harrogate Neighbours is a charity we both admire and volunteer for – the team there move mountains for people like my mum and Pete’s dad everyday and we hope to make lots of money for such a worthy cause.”

Good friends, Steve and Pete have trained rigorously together for months, preparing themselves for the physical and mental challenge that lie ahead.

Harrogate Neighbours CEO, Sue Cawthray expressed huge admiration and thanks for the climbers’ efforts.

She said:

“We are incredibly moved by Pete and Steve's support, dedication and bravery.

“Their journey will not only honour their parents but also bring much-needed funds to help us deliver our services to the people we care for within the community.”
