Harrogate district lollypop lady Mary Fisher has been honoured with a British Empire Medal for services to child road safety.
Harrogate district lollypop lady awarded British Empire Medal after 47 years of service A Harrogate district lollypop lady has been honoured with a British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to child road safety. 88-year-old Mary Fisher has been included in the King’s New Year’s Honours List after carrying out her duties for 47 years. She retired in December 2022, having started out in Summerbridge in 1975. It’s estimated that she carried out more than 18,000 morning and afternoon patrols during that time. Also included in the King’s Honour’s List were Harrogate residents Professor Paul Emery OBE, Dr Heidi Probst and John Ward, as well as Reverend Anthony James Collins from Ripon. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the New Year Honours list "recognises the exceptional achievements of people and those who have shown the highest commitment to selflessness and compassion.” He added:
