A giant walk-through art installation will bring colour, calm and sensory bliss to The Stray this summer.
Created by the world-renowned Architects of Air and designed by Artistic Director Alan Parkinson, this monumental inflatable structure, titled Luminarium, is designed to be 'gentle, inclusive and open to everyone'.
It will transform The Stray from 11th to 14th June.
Luminarium offers a dazzling maze of winding paths and soaring domes filled with radiant colour as light filters through the translucent fabric, creating an ever-changing, immersive experience.
Since 1992, more than three million visitors in over 40 countries across five continents have experienced Architects of Air’s monumental Luminaria sculptures.
Founder, designer and Artistic Director Alan Parkinson first started experimenting with light-filled sculptures in the I980s, with his incredible designs attracting global acclaim.
His aim is to harness the beauty of light and colour to create a sense of awe among visitors to his sculptures.
Alan said:
“What motivates me to design is the fact that I continue to be struck by the beauty of light and colour found in the luminaria.
"These structures nurture an awareness of a pure phenomenon that gently cuts through everyday conditioned perceptions and awakens a sense of wonder in people.”
Luminarium is the first event in Harrogate International Festivals’ Harrogate Unlocked project – marking the Festivals’ 60th anniversary – which is among the beneficiaries of funding from York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority aimed at boosting the region’s high streets.
Supported by David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, along with Harrogate BID, and part-funded by York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority, this unique programme of outdoor cultural events is aimed at bringing people together and strengthening the local economy and long-term resilience of the town’s high streets.
York and North Yorkshire Mayor, David Skaith said:

“Harrogate International Festivals know how to put on a show, so we’re backing a strong team with a big vision to bring the culture and footfall to the town centre with Harrogate Unlocked.
“This is one of 65 projects we’ve supported across York and North Yorkshire helping to transform our high streets into vibrant destinations that residents and visitors will want to return to again and again.”
