A Killinghall man who repeatedly assaulted his partner has been given a suspended prison sentence and a 15-year restraining order.
Andrew Stenson, 39, was sentenced at York Crown Court on Thursday (17th September) after pleading guilty to one count of intentional strangulation and three counts of assault.
He received a 21-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months.
The court heard Stenson began a relationship with the woman in 2020, but his behaviour became increasingly volatile and he assaulted her several times.
The violence escalated in January 2024 when he strangled her, leaving visible marks around her neck. She fled the home and reported the abuse to North Yorkshire Police.
Stenson initially denied the offences after his arrest. However, investigators uncovered a recording of a phone call in which he admitted putting his hands around his partner’s neck.
In a personal statement read to the court, the victim said:
“Throughout the relationship, my mental and physical health deteriorated. I was frequently ill, lost weight, and became uncharacteristically anxious over small things. I felt isolated, and ashamed that I could not protect myself.”
She said her health had improved significantly since leaving the relationship.
DC Kirsty Greenbank, of North Yorkshire Police, said:
“The victim suffered nightmares, weight loss and anxiety, all as a result of Stenson's treatment of her. Throughout the investigation he had ample opportunity to admit what he had done - but instead he lied again and again.
“Thankfully, the victim displayed extraordinary courage to pursue justice, and ensure he could not treat anyone else in the same way.
“I hope this case shows to any other victims of domestic violence: you are not alone, and the police are here to help. Talk to us, and we will work tirelessly to support and protect you.”
