Next month will see Knaresborough’s own Silver Band hold its first ever open doors event. As part of its commitment to providing affordable access to music making in the district, the band is searching for new brass and percussion players as it looks to the future.
Doors Opening for Budding Brass Players at Historic Band Event Next month will see Knaresborough’s own Silver Band hold its first ever open doors event. This free event will be held at The Church on Gracious Street (COGS), Knaresborough from 10.30am – 12.30pm on Saturday 7th October with refreshments included. As part of its commitment to providing affordable access to music making in the district, the band, with origins dating back to the 19th Century, is searching for new brass and percussion players as it looks to the future. In addition to a short performance from the Band, the open doors event will include opportunities to try out a choice of brass instruments, or a range of percussion instruments including a brand-new xylophone. There will also be the chance to join in with musical games, take part in prize-winning activities and take a spin on the tombola. Band members will also be available to chat and provide information on the history of the band and how to get involved. During the event, The Knaresborough Silver Band will be showcasing their new Training Band. Comprised of players from 8 to 80 with wide levels of experience, ranging from absolute beginners to senior band members, the Training Band began life just a year ago and already boasts over 15 players. The ensemble acts both as a feeder for the senior band but also as a performance band in its own right. Led by the principal cornet of the senior band, Denise Wilson, it gives players their first chance to play for fun alongside other musicians. Denise commented:
“We are so excited to open our doors to the untapped potential that is in our community. The senior band has bounced back brilliantly since Covid hit and now is the perfect time for us to develop the grassroots of the ensemble. Not only does it provide a free possibility to learn an instrument and develop musicianship, but our aim is to have fun. And, of course, as our members know, the benefits on wellbeing of collective music making are immense.
