Young people from across the Harrogate area have been recognised after winners were announced in the Health in Harrogate schools competitions.
The competitions, organised by Harrogate Medical Society, invited primary and secondary school pupils to submit artwork and creative writing inspired by Harrogate’s spa heritage and healthcare history.
Entries are being displayed as part of a six-week exhibition at the West Park Centre.
In the primary school competition, Seth, a pupil at St Mary’s School, was awarded first prize.
Speaking about the exhibition, he said:
“I think it’s great! I put a lot of effort into the drawing and all my friends in my school are happy with me for doing it.
“Many people in my family have worked at Harrogate Hospital and hospitals around Harrogate so I was inspired by them.”
In the secondary school category, first prize was awarded to Sula Stanhope from Harrogate Grammar School.
Sula’s winning entry was a short story about a nurse at the Royal Bath Hospital caring for a soldier.
She said:
“I’m over the moon. It was really exciting to get the news - I still can’t quite believe it!
“I’ve always been really interested in that period of history and I’ve always wanted to write a piece that wouldn’t necessarily be explored otherwise.”
On Saturday (18th April), Health in Harrogate hosted an additional highlight alongside the exhibition - a talk by Dr Jed Atkinson.
Dr Jed delivered a fascinating session which was fun and energetic and included experiments, captivating an audience of around 50 people, including competition winners.
The competitions formed part of a wider programme of events commemorating the historic 200th anniversary since the town welcomed patients to its first hospital.
