Rossett Acre receives award for commitment to walking to school

Rossett Acre was visited by Fiona Jones (right), Event Manager at Zero Carbon Harrogate.

Rossett Acre Primary School has received special recognition for its efforts in encouraging pupils and parents to walk to school.

The Harrogate school was visited by the Zero Carbon Harrogate team for taking part in the group's Walk to School Days.

The half-termly event sees parents leave their cars at home and walk, cycle or take public transport to school in a bid to reduce carbon emissions.

To date, over 10,000 pupils and their families from 36 local schools have taken part.

And Rossett Acre have been presented with a Gold Award for their commitment to the scheme.

Rossett Acre Headteacher, Mrs Corrine Penhale, said:

"We are delighted to be awarded the Gold Award for our commitment to the Walk to School Campaign.

"It is so important to encourage our families to walk to school for many reasons, including reducing our carbon footprint, making roads safer, and improving physical and mental health."

The Walk to School Day events are organised by Zero Carbon Harrogate, who highlight that cars are one of the biggest contributors of carbon emissions in North Yorkshire.

Taking part in Harrogate's Walk to School Day can help schools achieve national accreditations, including Healthy Schools Award, Eco Schools and Modeshift STAR.
