Families across Harrogate are set to benefit from a new emotional wellbeing and communication programme launching this summer, led by newly-appointed Principle Trust Patron Yasmin Shaheen-Zaffar.
Yasmin, founder of Watoto Play, will begin a five-month Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Communication Pilot in Harrogate and Otley from June 2026, aimed at supporting parents, carers and children navigating emotional overwhelm, screen-time challenges and communication breakdowns at home.
A neurodivergent BACP-accredited trauma counsellor, Yasmin works with adults, educators and families experiencing challenges linked to alexithymia, burnout, rejection sensitivity and emotion-based school avoidance.
The Harrogate-based programme will include monthly in-person sessions, practical tools to help families regulate emotions during moments of conflict, and AI-supported learning to reinforce communication skills in everyday life.
The pilot also comes as many schools introduce stricter mobile phone policies — changes which can create additional pressure within households.
Organisers say the sessions will help parents and carers approach difficult conversations around phones, boundaries and screen-time with greater understanding and confidence.
Yasmin said:
“Having quietly supported the charity over the past couple of years, officially becoming a Patron feels deeply aligned with the work I do every day. When families are given tools to communicate safely and regulate overwhelm, children experience greater stability, security, and connection.
“The new mobile phone policies will be welcomed by many, but they may also create difficult conversations at home. Parents need support, not shame, as they help children adjust to new boundaries around technology.”
The programme will run on a pay-as-you-feel basis to ensure accessibility for families across Harrogate and the wider area.
Proceeds raised will support both The Principle Trust Children’s Charity and Otley Community Larder.
