A new community garden created by Harrogate-based charity Horticap has officially opened at the town’s new Tesco store.
Tesco wanted to work with a local charity to create a green space for the benefit of shoppers and the wider community.
Horticap partnered on the scheme, which is intended both to raise awareness of the charity’s work and raise vital funds to support its activities.

The garden was completed over a three-week period and has been designed as a calm and welcoming space.
A spokesperson for Horticap said:
“Our inspiration was to create a peaceful area in a busy environment.
“Most supermarkets don't have any seating outside, but we want to buck the trend.
“The health benefits being sounded by trees and plants have been proven to help you feel better.”
The site’s history has also influenced the layout.
The land was formerly a train depot, which has been acknowledged through the use of reclaimed sleepers and a stone carving.

Planting includes a mix of trees and shrubs chosen to provide colour throughout the year, alongside soft fruiting plants intended to support local wildlife.
Horticap has committed to maintaining the garden for at least five years.
