Talented Harrogate runner George Mills has set a new British record after breaking a 5,000m time set by Sir Mo Farah.
The 26-year-old, who is the son of former footballer Danny Mills, recorded a time of 12:46.59 at the Bislett Games in Oslo on Friday.
It was more than 6 seconds faster than Sir Mo Farah’s time of 12:53.11, which had stood for 14 years.
Mills finished fourth in the race at the Oslo Diamond League in a time that is also the second all-time fastest for a European.
For perspective, his pace would see him complete Parkrun in a time of 12 minutes and 46 seconds.
He said:
“I couldn’t do it without my team, family and friends. So much work has gone into this from so many people, I cannot thank them enough.
“We will keep building - [there are] many more goals to accomplish!”
The race saw Mills take 12 seconds off his own personal best.
His father, Danny Mills, said:
“To see your son break the long-standing record held by the legendary Sir Mo Farah by nearly seven seconds was unreal.
“I couldn’t be prouder!”
