Harrogate women scale mountain to raise £30,000 for charity

A team of fundraisers have scaled Sapitwa Peak in Malawi.

A team of courageous women have successfully scaled a 9,800-foot mountain whilst raising more than £30,000 for a Harrogate-based charity.

The team of 12, including eight from Harrogate, scaled Sapitwa Peak, the highest point of Mount Mulanje in Malawi.

And they were able to raise a whopping £30,328 for Open Arms Malawi.

The group originally aimed to raise £20,000, but after completing the grueling three-day trek, their fundraising total soared to over £30,000 – a testament to their determination and the community’s generous support.

Claire Collins from Open Arms Malawi said:

“This was a physically and emotionally demanding challenge.

“Everyone pushed themselves to the limit, and their achievement is truly inspiring.

“The funds raised will make a significant difference to the lives of children and families we support in Malawi.

“We are incredibly proud and grateful.”

Open Arms Malawi, founded 25 years ago in Harrogate, supports families caring for orphaned and vulnerable babies in Malawi.

The challenge participants visited some of these families ahead of the climb, witnessing first-hand the life-changing impact of the charity’s work.

Fundraising challenges such as this allow Open Arms Malawi to continue its mission to build brighter futures for vulnerable children.
