A Harrogate teenager has been named 'Young Chef of the Year' by Rotary Club of Harrogate.
The annual competition saw pupils from seven local secondary schools battle it out in an attempt to 'wow' the judges - Stephanie Moon, Executive Chef from Rudding Park and Clare Walsh, a retired Deputy Head and Food Technology teacher.
Students were tasked with producing a two-course healthy meal for two costing up to £18, prepared within a two-hour window.
They were marked on their planning, costings, choices, neatness of working area, skills used, presentation and taste.
And this year’s winner is Farrah Burton, a Year 10 student at Harrogate Grammar School.
Farrah impressed with her sushi main course and profiteroles dessert, scooping a £50 book token and certificate.
Ann Percival, the President of Rotary Club of Harrogate, said:
“The judges were extremely impressed with the high standard shown by all students, all of whom were very ambitious… resulting in a close finish!
“Farrah was such a neat, meticulous worker. Stephanie Moon even commented that Farrah should consider becoming a food stylist!”
Farrah is taking GCSE Food technology next year and intends to take the subject at A Level, with the intention of pursuing a career in food.
Mrs Jade Williams, Head of Food Technology at Harrogate Grammar, said she is “very proud” of Farrah and has asked her to be an assistant at next year’s competition.
