Harrogate’s Poundland faces an uncertain future as the retailer seeks a rescue deal.
The discount chain, which has a branch in the Victoria Shopping Centre, filed a notice of intention to appoint administrators yesterday (Thursday).
The move gives the business 10 working days of protection from creditors while advisers explore potential deals.
Around 12,000 jobs are at risk across the chain.
In a statement, a spokesperson for Poundland said:
“Our stores remain open as normal and we thank our staff, suppliers and customers for their continued support.”
The retailer said its sale process had not secured an acceptable offer for the whole business.
However, several established retail operators have submitted offers which collectively cover a significant part of the company.
Poundland said these offered the best available prospects for preserving jobs and securing an outcome for creditors and shareholders.
The development follows owner Gordon Brothers’ rejection of a takeover offer from Martin Property Group, which Poundland’s management had identified as its preferred bidder.
Gordon Brothers bought the retailer for £1 last year and launched a sale process in September.
Advisers remain in talks with potential buyers interested in acquiring the brand and stores.
