Harrogate MP writes to council over Tesco construction 'breaches'

Tom Gordon MP has expressed concerns about the works on Harrogate's new Tesco store.

Local MP Tom Gordon has again written to North Yorkshire Council demanding urgent action over "repeated breaches" of planning conditions at the new Tesco development on Skipton Road.

The Liberal Democrat MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough said he has spoken to residents that are concerned by Tesco’s contractors, KPS, and their work on the new site.

Tom claims breaches include work starting before 8am on weekdays, continuing long past permitted hours, and operating throughout the weekend, with noise levels described as "intolerable" for a residential area.

In September, Tom and local councillors wrote to Council leaders warning of the severe disruption caused by the site, including prolonged road closures, repeated breaches of planning conditions and persistent excessive noise, urging the Council to use its enforcement powers to address the situation.

In his latest letter to the Council, Tom claimed that residents have been "left to endure relentless disruption and excessive noise".

He said:

"Tesco’s contractors clearly fear missing deadlines far more than any repercussions from the Council, which is hardly surprising given the Council has failed to use its enforcement powers.

"Meanwhile, residents are paying the price, forced to endure constant noise and disruption at all hours with no support or protection.

"Overall, the Council’s handling of this site has been a complete failure, neglecting its responsibility to the community and leaving residents to manage rogue operators entirely on their own."

North Yorkshire Council has confirmed that the ongoing roadworks are on schedule, with full completion anticipated on or before Sunday 23rd November.

Tesco is aiming for an opening date of 27th November 2025.

The temporary one-way system has been in place for several months to allow road widening, resurfacing and utility works as part of the new supermarket’s construction.

Once the works are completed, normal two-way traffic is expected to resume along Skipton Road.
