A Ripon man will complete three gruelling mountain challenges in five days to raise money for a heart charity.
Richard Ebbage will begin his ‘3 Peaks, 1 Heart’ challenge on Monday 26th April 2027.
His first task will see him dismantle a rowing machine, carry it to the summit of Ben Nevis and complete a marathon-distance row at the top.
Two days later, Richard will bear crawl from Wasdale to the summit of Scafell Pike.
His final challenge will involve performing burpee broad jumps from the foot of Snowdon to its summit.
Richard is aiming to raise £70,000 for Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY), having been diagnosed with the same heart condition that killed his father.
He was 17 when his dad died from undiagnosed cardiomyopathy at the age of 50.
Richard later joined the Royal Marines and developed a successful endurance sport career, winning 12 of the 13 races he entered during 2016.
His achievements included victories at Ironman Vichy, ICAN Valencia, The Vitruvian and the British Triathlon Championships.
He was also named Royal Marines, Royal Navy and Combined Services Sportsman of the Year.
However, after 12 years in the Royal Marines, Richard was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy during a routine medical examination and told he was at high risk of cardiac arrest.
The diagnosis brought his military and competitive sporting careers to an end.
Richard has since been told his condition has improved enough for him to compete again with appropriate guidance and caution.
He said:
“It’s a bit of a crazy idea and it’s a crazy challenge. I know it hasn’t been thought of before.
“The last five years I’ve been in limbo with my training. I’ve gone from a very active lifestyle in the Marines, where I was training every day, to not really having any direction on what I could and couldn’t do.
“I feel like it’d be great to play catch-up on those last five years, really do something good and give myself a challenge.”
CRY works to prevent young sudden cardiac deaths through awareness, screening and research, while supporting affected families.
Richard’s fundraiser has already received more than £2,400 in donations.
