Children and staff at Hampsthwaite Primary School have raised vital funds for two worthwhile local causes.
The school have chosen to support 16-year-old Hampsthwaite resident Elizabeth Catton, who was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive type of cancer.
Beth’s mum, Vicky Robayna, launched a fundraiser to cover the costs of a consultation with specialists from America.
And in response, Hampsthwaite Headteacher Mrs Ross organised a number of fundraising activities, including a photography competition, a cake stall and a non-uniform day.
Mrs Ross said:
“We were deeply saddened by the news of Beth’s illness.
“There had been several fundraising efforts within our close-knit village, but we were also keen to show support.
“Pupils, Jack and Jess, who are close neighbours of Beth, initiated the fundraisers at school and everyone within our community was instantly eager to participate.
“We chose to include a photography competition as we knew that photography is one of Beth’s favourite hobbies and it also enabled pupils to express themselves creatively; which we actively encourage and forms part of our core school values.”
The school has also been fundraising for Ripon social enterprise, Jennyruth Workshops. The charity provides training to adults who have learning disabilities in a wide variety of skills.
As part of their charity evening, Pupils performed a selection of songs from the musical, ‘Bugsy’, including popular hits such as ‘Fat Sam’s Grand Slam’ and ‘Bad Guys’.
The children were accompanied by members of the Danceability group, who also work for the Ripon-based charity.
Mrs Hudson, one of the teachers leading the cast, said:
“We were so proud of the pupils for their commitment to several months of rehearsals, learning songs and dance routines. All of their hard work paid off and it was an impressive final performance.
“We were pleased to donate £200 to Jennyruth Workshops which was raised through generous donations and a raffle on the evening of the show.”
Hampsthwaite Primary School is located in the village of Hampsthwaite just outside of Harrogate, with a nursery class for children aged 3-4, followed by classes for Reception to Year 6.
