Much-loved village pub to reopen this week after six years

A much-loved village pub near Boroughbridge is set to reopen its doors this week after six years of closure.

The Black Lion, which has stood in Skelton-on-Ure for generations, will officially reopen on Friday (15th November) under new, community-focused management.

The reopening follows a six-year effort by locals and investors to raise the funds needed to restore and relaunch the venue.

The pub aims to once again serve as a welcoming space for residents and visitors alike, offering traditional food, real ales and what the new team describes as “a warm Yorkshire welcome.”

The Black Lion has remained closed since 2019.

It will be run by new tenants Tadgh Barry and Mary Benson.

The pair will offer Sunday roasts and seasonal specials, as well as the shop which will be stocked with gifts.

Tadgh and Mary said:

“Between us we have many years experience operating pubs in London, which we worked on together to build into thriving businesses and community cornerstones.

“We also have a wealth of experience working in design (particularly fashion and homeware), illustration, styling, photography and marketing.

“We believe our backgrounds will help us build The Black Lion into a beautiful destination worth travelling to!”

They added:

“Pubs have always brought our little family great joy to run, especially getting to know communities and providing a wonderful and welcoming home from home.

“We can’t wait to get started, and very excited to reveal our plans for this beautifully renovated and much loved pub.

“A great thanks to all for entrusting us to continue this special journey of bringing the Black Lion back to life.”
