Visitors and residents in Knaresborough will benefit from improved public conveniences thanks to a joint initiative by North Yorkshire Council and local councillors.
Phase One of the project has been completed just in time for the town’s busy Christmas events, ensuring families have access to safe, practical facilities.
The upgrades include:
- Baby changing units in both ladies’ and gents’ toilets at Conyngham Hall.
- A baby changing unit in the disabled toilet at Knaresborough Castle.
- Hooks for changing bags for added convenience.
- Planned improvements to lighting at Conyngham Hall entrances for better safety and comfort.
This project was supported by Cllr Matt Walker and Cllr Hannah Gostlow through their locality budgets.
The initiative was sparked by feedback from a local resident who had a challenging experience caring for their grandchild and highlighted the lack of suitable facilities.
The issue was also raised on a local independent podcast, where a shop owner identified a need across the town.
Cllr Hannah Gostlow said:
“Baby changing facilities are a priority for us. These improvements will make a real difference for families visiting our town during the festive season."
Cllr Matt Walker added:
“We’re delighted to see these upgrades completed before Christmas. It’s a great example of how locality funding can improve everyday amenities for residents and visitors."
Councillors Walker said the project is 'just the beginning' and that he will continue working with North Yorkshire Council, Knaresborough Town Council and local community groups on further improvements.
