Harrogate pupils' harvest helps feed homeless people

Harrogate High pupils Ella, Rosie and Freddie and Marion from the Harrogate Homeless Project.

Locally grown onions, potatoes and broad beans are providing meals for the homeless thanks to pupils at Harrogate High School.

The schools ‘Environment and Growing Club’ has studied where our food comes from and taken practical action by growing vegetables from scratch in the school grounds.

As well as being a useful learning experience, the school’s generous donation of the produce to Harrogate Homeless Project’s Springboard day centre has helped raise awareness of homelessness in the community.

Alison Wilson, who runs the club, said:

“The children have learnt where our food comes from and provided food to a local charity.

"So it’s a double benefit – healthy food with a low carbon footprint to make meals for those who have trouble providing nutritious meals for themselves.”

Harrogate Homeless Project’s community partnerships lead, Marian Farrar, added:

“Our day centre kitchen relies on donated food and we are fortunate to have so many partners – like Harrogate High School – who support us.

"This enables us to provide a nutritious cooked lunch to rough sleepers or those at risk of homelessness every weekday.

"Thank you again to the staff and pupils.”
