More than 100 years of popular music will be celebrated in a show at Harrogate's Royal Hall this weekend.
Summerbell Dance Academy will be presenting Dancing Through the Decades on Saturday (6th June) - a dance show filled with favourite songs from the 1920s onwards.
From Charleston and Peaky Blinders-inspired routines, the night will weave its way to the present day via classic Disney songs and hit musical numbers, all performed by members of the dance school agreed from three upwards.
As well as ballet, there will be tap, jazz and contemporary dance on the programme, along with musical theatre performances and impressive acro routines.
Dance school principal Jennie Summerbell said:
“What’s lovely about this year’s show is that it holds something special for all our dancers, from the very youngest to the older members of the school.
“We’re lucky to have dancers of all ages, right up to their 70s and 80s, and we’re celebrating music of all eras that they remember and love. It has also been a great opportunity for the younger members to discover classic songs they hadn’t heard before and try out new styles of dance."
Among the hits on the programme will be songs by Queen, the Beatles, Michael Jackson, the Spice Girls and Lionel Ritchie. They’ll complement more recent pieces from the likes of Lady Gaga, Harry Styles and K-Pop Demon Hunters.
There will also be songs from huge musicals including Grease, Dirty Dancing, West Side Story and a selection of Disney films.
Established in 2012, Summerbell Dance Academy is run by sisters Jennie and Hazel Summerbell, supported by teacher Tasha Lobley. It is based at St Andrew’s Church Hall in Starbeck, where boys and girls aged from three upwards can join classes in a wide range of dance styles, as well as developing their skills and taking exams.
Ms Summerbell added:
“Being able to use the stunning Royal Hall is a wonderful opportunity for our dancers to experience performing in a historic venue in front of a live audience, often for the first time.
“Our dancers have shown such dedication and teamwork to plan and practise for a fantastic night of entertainment. We have been rehearsing intensely right up to this week, when we’re making the final tweaks, perfecting performances and adjusting costumes and sets.
“We can’t wait to share the results of all our hard work with the audience on Saturday night!”
Summerbell Dance Academy’s Movies and Musicals takes place at the Royal Hall, Harrogate, on Saturday, June 6 at 6.30pm.
